        A Skill Festival for Year8s

Last year’s third annual Skills Fest, hosted by Chelmsford City Council on June 27th, 2024, at Writtle University College, was filled with creativity and discovery. This event brought together nearly 1,200 students eager to explore and cultivate their skills across various disciplines. Each year, the Skills Fest serves as a platform for students to engage, learn, and unleash their creative potential. A standout feature was the introduction of the Creative Quarter, a collaboration between Ignite Chelmsford’s Liz Hunter-Gray, Spark’s Rachana Vaja and myself. This vibrant space celebrated independent creatives, showcasing their unique talents and fostering an environment of innovation. Students were drawn in by the lively atmosphere, where they could immerse themselves in the arts and crafts that local creators brought to life.

           Character Creation Workshop Winner!

I had the honor of leading the Ignite Chelmsford character competition workshop. Year 8 students eagerly gathered at my stall to delve into the art of storytelling and character building, a process that I am passionate about. During the workshop, students explored the foundations of character development, including traits, motivations, and settings. This hands-on experience not only allowed them to channel their creativity but also focused on enhancing their writing skills and narrative understanding. The workshop was designed to provide a supportive environment where students could freely express their ideas and cultivate their imaginations. As they worked, I encouraged them to create backstories and think deeply about what makes their characters relatable and engaging. The vibrant energy from the workshop was palpable, and the thrill of creating unique characters was evident in every student’s face.

The culmination of the workshop led to an exciting competition, where students presented their characters to their peers. Seeing the creativity and enthusiasm of the participants was truly rewarding. This event emphasized the importance of collaboration and community among young creatives, showing that together, they could achieve remarkable things. Overall, the third annual Skills Fest was not just a celebration of creativity; it was a robust platform encouraging young talents to discover and refine their skills in a collaborative atmosphere. Events like these serve as a reminder of the importance of fostering creativity in education, as it plays a crucial role in developing the innovators of tomorrow.
